    • To determine the kinetic properties of 1 toward the reduced enzyme, a series of samples containing the purified mutase (500 nM), 12 mM freshly prepared sodium dithionite and UDP-6-deoxy-6-fluoro-α-d-Galf (0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.6, 0.75, 1.0, 1.7, and 3.0 mM) in a total volume of 20 μL of 100 mM potassium phosphate (pH 7.6) were prepared. Each sample was incubated at 21 °C for 10 min and frozen with liquid nitrogen to terminate the reaction. The contents of these samples were analyzed by HPLC as described above. The kinetic parameters were deduced by fitting these data to the Michaelis-Menten equation.

    • Hyperchem Molecular Visualization and Simulation software (Hypercube, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, software HyperChem 7.5) was used to calculate the charges on the interesting atoms using the PM3 force field. The resulting charge values were not considered individually but were rather used to make comparisons between similar species.
