Excimer formation is a common phenomenon for square-planar Pt(II) systems. In the case of Pt(MesBIAN) compounds, the difference in energies between the two bands forming the emission spectrum of 1-3 is typical for a vibrational progression and is much smaller than that reported previously for monomer/excimer formation in similar complexes, and the spectral shape does not depend on the concentration from 15 to 70 M. We therefore tend to attribute the emission spectrum observed under our experimental conditions to monomer emission, rather than to a combination of a monomer and an excimer emission. The lack of stacking under the concentrations used may also be attributed to the bulky mesityl groups of the MesBIAN ligand.
