Inertsil ODS-ΙΙΙ column (i.d. 2.1 × 250 mm; 3 μm, GL Sciences Inc.) and 0.1% aqueous formic acid (A) and acetonitrile (B) were used as the mobile phase. The gradient program was 0% B for 5 min, a linear gradient from 0% to 13% B for 10 min and a linear gradient from 13% to 38% B for 60 min at a flow rate of 0.2 mL/min detected at 280 nm. By the results of this phloroglucinol cleavage experiments for the procyanidins 1 and 2, the epicatechin-phloroglucinol and epicatechin were detected. These results showed that each of the procyanidins 1 and 2 was composed of only epicatechin unit.
