We previously described oligo(biindole) foldamers able to fold a helical structure upon binding chloride in organic media: Chang, K.-J, Kang, B.-N, Lee, M.-H, Jeong, K.-S. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2005, 127, 12214. These oligo(biindole)s were slowly decomposed into unknown compounds under basic hydrolysis conditions, and no evidence was found for folding and anion-binding properties of a water-soluble derivative in water
