24. This "scalar potential" can be identified as a nonlinear function of the pseudoscalar curvature, as can be seen from Eq. (3.14) in. If one tried to introduce a scalar potential for the axial torsion directly into the PGT action it would lead to a different set of dynamic equations. Because the quadratic curvature terms effectively include derivatives of the torsion, it thus would have second derivatives of the scalar potential-which would give rise to an undesired fourth order equation for the potential.
