    • Intra-axonal translation and retrograde trafficking of CREB promotes neuronal survival
    • This study adds to the existing model that the retrograde neurotrophic signal is carried by a 'signaling endosome' that activates transcription factors in the cell body, by showing that the transcription factor CREB is itself synthesized in axons and retrogradely trafficked to the cell body. Surprisingly, axonally synthesized CREB is required for cell survival, suggesting that pre-existing CREB in the cell body does not function in this pathway.

    • This study identifies a novel translational regulator, Krasavietz, as a binding partner for the F-actin-microtubule crosslinker, Short stop, and shows that both are required for Slit/Robo-mediated midline repulsion in Drosophila, suggesting a functional connection between the cytoskeleton and translational regulation in axon guidance.
