    • Upon UV-light irradiation of the azobenzene-containing monomer (Azo), the absorption at 320 nm of trans-azobenzene gradually decreased and disappeared after 20 min. In agreement with this, the absorption at 440 nm of cis-azobenzene appeared and increased. Upon further irradiation with visible light for 20 min, the absorption at 320 nm almost recovered, and that at 440 nm disappeared; It was concluded that the azobenzene moiety of the monomer reversibly isomerized between trans and cis forms. It was therefore reasonable to conclude that the azobenzene moiety of the polymer side chain also underwent reversible photoisomerization.
