note
-
A mild flow of the electrolyte through the capillary was necessary to avoid bubbles blocking the capillary. This mild flow was due partly to a small inevitable asymmetry of the feed-streams and partly to the vigorous stirring applied in both reservoirs. This also destroyed any water structuring inside the capillary which could appear inside the gel or nearby the gel in the absence of stirring (cf. [18]).

-4 M. It is assumed that the ratio of the diffusion coefficients in the gel and in the free solution is the same (see also Appendix B on this question).

H what matters in most calculations (e.g., concentration profiles). In the calculations it was assumed that this relative diffusivity in the gel is equal to that of in pure water, as an approximation.
