    • An earlier report by Funk and Fuchs described the formation of 3,3-disubstituted 2-indolinones from the reaction of 3-bromo-3-alkyl-2-indolinones with base. The reaction was proposed to proceed by way of a 2H-indol-2-one intermediate which could be trapped by various π-nucleophiles as well as by a [4+2]-cycloaddition with a tethered alkyne, see:
