    • The Hind III digested double stranded λ-DNA consists of fragments composed by 23130, 2027, 2322, 9416, 564, 6682, 4361 bp, each terminated with 4 bp long single stranded ends (sticky ends) having sequences defined by the site of the enzymatic cut, which do not re-hybridize at room temperature. Only the extremities of the molecule, that is, the 5′ end of the 23130 bp fragment and the 3′ end of the 4361 bp fragment are terminated by 12 bp long sticky ends, which are known to hybridize at room temperature. In fact, in the gel a band correspondent to a fragment of about 27500 bp is present, which derives from hybridization of a number of 4361 bp fragments with 23130 bp fragments. These fragments are held together only by the hydrogen bonds between the complementary sticky ends, since the linking of the backbones requires specific enzymatic action. The fact that these long fragments are found after incubation with Pt(II) complexes means that the double stranded configuration is maintained over a length as short as 12 bp.
