Concentration of nanorods: To determine the concentration of stock solutions of rods (CTAB rods, PDADMAC rods, etc.), the rods were digested in nitric acid and the gold-atom concentration was measured by ICP-AES. These stock solutions were diluted with media and added to cells, and the concentrations added are consequently listed as micromoles of gold atoms, as in Ref. [10]. To convert measurements of gold atoms In cells to gold nanorods per cell, we measured the dimensions of more than 30 nanorods in a TEM image and calculated the which, in combination with the molecular weight and density, yielded values of nanorods per cell.
