In this article, the authors studied a host of pro-angiogenic factors in SCD patients and controls and demonstrate that SCD is dominated by elevated levels of pro-angiogenic factors. Of note, this work failed to show an increase in VEGF levels during vaso-occlusive crisis, representing the heterogeneity of patient populations and quantitative methods.

In this SNP analysis of candidate genes for susceptibility to overwhelming infection in SCD, several genes in the TGF-b family were found to be associated with bacteremia. The authors propose that these polymorphisms may help to identify a 'bacteremia-prone' phenotype in SCD.

Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol 2006; 26:1626-1631. In this work, Lee and colleagues describe for the first time a potential role of a known inflammatory mediator - CD40L - in SCD. They document that the platelet is the origin of the elevated CD40L levels in SCD patients and illustrate the novel inflammatory role for the platelet in SCD.
