One of several landmark Veterans Affairs studies that were among the first to compare two or more active drugs head to head. This was one of the few that demonstrated differences in efficacy: valproate and carbamazepine were equivalent in their ability to control generalized tonic-clonic seizures, but carbamazepine was superior in its ability to control complex partial seizures.
