A paper presenting data for a complex questionnaire instrument to evaluate the various domains of illness during a self-assessed viral upper respiratory tract infection. Instrument domains include those typically captured by the Jackson criteria but also those related to complications and general quality of life. Importantly, the presented analyses show that the elements of the Jackson criteria are essentially orthogonal dimensions i.e. loading on different factors, The full utility of the instrument has not been assessed and must await the reduction of variables to a useful set for longitudinal assessments of a complex symptom/sign complex in treatment trials

A study that compared WURSS and Jackson assessments of a cold and demonstrated high correlations. These assessments were less well correlated with certain objective measures such as IL-8 production, secretion weight, polymorphonuclear cell number and virus titer. We would argue that those surrogate objective markers were wrongly chosen as, for example, IL-6 is a better marker of inflammation than IL-8, viral titer at later times during infection is delinked from the SSC and the objective markers of secretion production and polymorphonuclear cell number should have been incorporated into an assignment algorithm prior to comparisons see [45
