Using XPS data, we found that about 80% of the iminic nitrogens were complexed to gold. A statistical analysis of the number of darker lobes versus lighter lobes in STM images suggests that 98% of the iminic nitrogens are in fact complexed (55% of bright lobes and 45% of dark lobes). Given the possibility of a fast exchange that would not be observed on the STM time scale, these two values compare favorably.
