    • The only other known systems that will catalytically reduce dinitrogen are those discovered by Shilov (Shilov, A. E. Russ. Chem. Bull. Int. Ed. 2003, 52, 2555). These systems require Mo and are catalytic with respect to Mo, but they reduce dinitrogen to a mixture of hydrazine and ammonia (∼10:1). The reaction is run in methanol in the presence of magnesium hydroxide and a strong reducing agent such as sodium amalgam. Few mechanistic details are known.
