It is most likely that carboxylic acids will be absorbed high up in the GI tract, where the pH is still quite low, and certainly lower than neutral pH. Repeating the Caco-2 flux experiment with S-19 at pH 6.5 gives a higher flux value of around 5, more in keeping with the observed in vivo absorption.
