    • The spectral band structure is significantly altered when the two nanorods are touching each other end-to-end (Figure 5a, R = 81 nm). Interesting spectral characteristics of particles touching each other have already been investigated by Atwater and co-workers (ref 45). At the same time, exceptions to the applicability of electrodynamic simulations to particles touching each other have also been cited (ref 46).
