The use of the apoprotein, which has negative surface charge, enhances the electrostatic adhesion and stiffness of the lipid bilayers on the positively charged surface (by the amino group of APTMS, which is charged in the 0.1 N HCl solution used here) for robust I-V measurements (to prevent shorting).
