-
Luyt CE, Guerin V, Combes A, et al. Procalcitonin kinetics as a prognostic marker of ventilator-associated pneumonia. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2005; 171:48-53. The value of procalcitonin kinetics as a prognostic marker during VAP was investigated in a prospective, observational study of 63 patients with microbiologically proven VAP. To predict unfavorable outcome, a procalcitonin cut-off value of 0.5 ng/ml on day 7 had a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 88%, leading the authors to postulate that procalcitonin may provide an opportunity to change the treatment strategy early in the course of VAP.
