Rheumatology (Oxford) 2006; Feb 22 [Epub ahead of print] An association between HLA-DRB1'13 and uveitis was reported in a cohort of British oligoarticular JIA patients. These findings were replicated in an independent cohort highlighting the potential for future genetic screening for disease characteristics.

Analysis of families in the Multiple Autoimmune Disease Genetics Consortium (MADGC) collection: the PTPN22 620W allele associates with multiple autoimmune phenotypes. Am J Hum Genet 2005; 76:561-571. The recently discovered functional SNP (R620W) in PTPN22 was found to be associated with multiple autoimmune diseases including T1D, rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, and Hashimoto thyroiditis, but not in multiple sclerosis. This study suggests that functional SNPs may confer susceptibility to some, but not all, autoimmune disorders possibly reflecting different pathways to disease.
