    • Specific GABAA circuits for visual cortical plasticity
    • Adding to previous studies from the same group, which show the importance of the level of inhibitory transmission for initiating OD plasticity in mice, the authors show that the critical period is triggered prematurely by enhancing GABA-A receptor mediated transmission through the α1-subunit. This suggests that sufficient inhibition through somatic, α1-subunit enriched synapses from fast-spiking large basket cells is required for OD plasticity.

    • How monocular deprivation shifts ocular dominance in visual cortex of young mice
    • This study using VEPs provides important insight into the mechanisms of MD-induced OD shifts. The authors show the contribution of two separate processes, an initial weakening of deprived-eye responses of cortical neurons and, only after that has occurred, the strengthening of non-deprived eye responses. Complete silencing of an eye by TTX injections prevents the weakening of cortical responses to that eye, whereas it promotes the strengthening of responses to the untreated eye.

    • Prior experience enhances plasticity in adult visual cortex
    • Using intrinsic signal imaging, the authors show that one episode of MD strongly facilitates subsequent OD plasticity later in life. A few days of MD resulted in a strong shift in OD, which fully recovered after reopening of the deprived eye. Nevertheless, the induction of a second MD several weeks later led to faster and more persistent OD shifts. This conditioning effect was independent of age, but it was specific for the eye that was deprived previously. In addition, substantial OD plasticity in both hemispheres of normal adult mice was observed with intrinsic signal imaging and extracellular recordings.

    • By means of structural imaging in fixed cortical tissue, the authors present evidence for fast anatomical consequences of MD in mice. Four days of deprivation caused significant loss of dendritic spines on apical dendrites of layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons. This spine pruning was only observed in the binocular visual cortex of juvenile mice and required the activity of tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA).

    • Modulation of spike timing by sensory deprivation during induction of cortical map plasticity
    • An interesting study showing, with extracellular recordings in the somatosensory cortex of awake, behaving rats, that acute whisker deprivation did not lead to substantial changes in firing rate, but strongly changed spike timing in cortical neurons. The firing order of neurons in layer 4 and layer 2/3 was reversed and spike trains became decorrelated.

    • Experience-driven plasticity of visual cortex limited by myelin and Nogo receptor
    • The authors discovered a molecule limiting cortical plasticity that presumably acts by inhibiting structural rearrangements. Mice deficient in Nogo-signalling, which mediates inhibition of neurite outgrowth by myelin, show enhanced OD plasticity in adulthood. Together with the study by Pizzorusso et al. [64], these results indicate that the molecular composition of the external milieu governs the capacity for plasticity.
