This paper is from a volume of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek devoted to marine actinomycetes, which covers material presented at sessions at the 13th International Symposium on Actinomycete Biology in Melbourne, 2004. As well as a brief introduction to the high frequency of novel metabolites being found in the marine environment, it exemplifies the role of 'natural' natural products as leads for new approaches to drug discovery. In this case, re-engineering marine-derived poly-ketide synthase to generate 'unnatural' natural products.

Comparative metagenomics of microbial communities

This is a metagenome analysis by gene-content analysis, a whole genome-based analysis avoiding some of the challenges of genome assembly from highly diverse communities. Roughly half of the predicted proteins showed homology to orthologous groups and these were collected into functional groups (homologous genes, operons, higher order processes from Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes [KEGG], and Clusters of Orthologous Groups of protein [COG] database functional categories) giving functional profiles. Actinobacteria are present but secondary metabolite gene categories are not referred to.

Roughly half of the predicted proteins showed homology to orthologous groups and these were collected into functional groups (homologous genes, operons, higher order processes from Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes [KEGG], and Clusters of Orthologous Groups of protein [COG] database functional categories) giving functional profiles. Actinobacteria are present but secondary metabolite gene categories are not referred to.
