    • This paper is from a volume of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek devoted to marine actinomycetes, which covers material presented at sessions at the 13th International Symposium on Actinomycete Biology in Melbourne, 2004. As well as a brief introduction to the high frequency of novel metabolites being found in the marine environment, it exemplifies the role of 'natural' natural products as leads for new approaches to drug discovery. In this case, re-engineering marine-derived poly-ketide synthase to generate 'unnatural' natural products.
