1. The main source of data for this article is 30 semi-structured, in-depth interviews with key informants involved in defence and security issues in the southern African region. This research strategy was adopted to avoid the tendency of questionnaires to fracture experience when respondents are encouraged to reduce their experiences and understandings to fragments that can be captured in a question-and-answer format. The interviews were conducted by me, and my status as a white, middle-class, South African woman, has obviously coloured my interpretation. The article also draws on primary and secondary sources and participant observation in the demilitarisation movement in South Africa.
