Lien G, Selvaag, Flato B, et al. A two-year prospective controlled study of bone mass and bone turnover in children with early juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Arthritis Rheum 2005; 52:883-840. This study is unique compared to other reports of bone mass in pediatric rheumatology in that children with JIA were followed prospectively and found to have decreased bone mass compared to controls. This is one of few longitudinal studies evaluating bone mass in children.

El-Husseini AA, El-Agroudy AE, El-Sayed MF, et al. Treatment of osteopenia and osteoporosis in renal transplant children and adolescents. Pediatr Transplant 2004; 8:357-361. This study is one of few in pediatrics to prospectively examine bisphosphonates or calcitonin compared to a control group. The children in the treatment arms had improvement in DXA measurements, while bone density decreased in the control group.
