    • Because thermal fluctuations of the STM must be avoided, some care is necessary when filling the liquid nitrogen trap. We have found that a minimum time of 6 h is required to allow the STM to equilibrate back to room temperature after filling the liquid nitrogen trap, and before the next experiment is performed.

    • Fourier processing was used to remove the effects of 60 Hz interference in these images caused by the nearby solenoid gate valve in Chamber III. Switching to a dc-driven solenoid has since removed this source of instrumental noise.
