    • The charge density at the Cu(001) surface is very smooth, and as a result, the lattice is usually not resolved in STM images. Occasionally, adsorption of an unknown impurity at the end of the tip led to enhanced corrugation in the STM image and resolution of the copper lattice atoms. The adsorption sites of adsorbates were thereby determined.
