    • The preparation of ordered self-assembled monolayers of the cavitands on gold was not possible. The cross-sectional area of the phenylpyridine-bridged upper rim is much larger than the cross-sectional area of the sulfide chains at the lower rim, which makes a well-ordered packing on the surface impossible (see also ref. [9]). Surface absorption by self-assembly results in disordered monolayers, on which it was not possible to perform cage assembly. 'Molecular ruler' experiments, as described in ref. [4], indicated no height difference after the cage assembly step.
