    • One should note that, although phenanthroline may be considered an electron-poor species and a poor candidate for oxidation, in fact its gas-phase ionization potential (IP) is ∼8.3 eV (less than that of toluene and diphenylmethane) http://webbook.nist.gov/chemistry/. The presence of two aminophenyl groups should significantly reduce this IP. Note that the IP of 4-aminobiphenyl is 7.5 eV versus benzene 9.25 eV.
