This work shows the promise of a small amphipathic peptide that can be added to drinking water to modulate the anti-inflammatory nature of HDL as well as stimulate cholesterol efflux. Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol 2004; 24:490-497. This study tests the efficacy of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein inhibitor compound torcetrapib in human subjects. The authors demonstrate a dose-dependent increase in HDL levels. This work has major implications for the protective role of HDL. Is it enough simply to raise HDL levels or is it better to increase cholesterol flux through the system?
