Basic calcium phosphate crystals activate p44/42 MAPK signal transduction pathway via protein kinase Cmu in human fibroblasts
-
Reuben PM, Sun Y, Cheung HS. Basic calcium phosphate crystals activate p44/42 MAPK signal transduction pathway via protein kinase Cmu in human fibroblasts. J Biol Chem 2004; 279:35719-35725. This article presented evidence for the first time that crystals induce cellular activation by way of two independent but complementary signal transduction pathways. One involves calcium-dependent PKC-α, and the other requires calcium-independent PKC-μ. These two pathways, although independent, complement each other for the efficient regulation of cellular responses to crystal stimulation.

CPPD crystal associated induction of neutrophil activation and regression of TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis is mediated by the p38 MAP Kinase

Tudan C, Jackson JK, Higo TT, et al. CPPD crystal associated induction of neutrophil activation and regression of TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis is mediated by the p38 MAP Kinase. Cell Signal 2004; 16:211-221. This report presents evidence that CPPD crystal-associated induction of neutrophil activation and regression of TNFα-induced apoptosis is mediated by the p38 MAPK signal transduction pathway. This strongly suggests that CPPD crystals function to induce an acute inflammatory response by stimulation of neutrophil activation and repression of apoptosis.
