This paper established the feasibility of human cellular cardiomyoplasiy for myocardial repair using skeletal myoblasts after acute myocardial infarction, with contraction seen in previously akinetic myocardium. However, patients suffered high rates of ventricular arrhythmias requiring cardioverter-defibrillator implantation.

This clinical study used intracoronary injection of autologous bone marrow derived or circulating progenitor cells after acute myocordial infarction. Both treatments improved myocordial contractile function when compared with on untreated reference group of control patients. The authors have initiated a randomised controlled trial based on this pilot study.

Effects of intracoronary infusion of peripheral blood stem-cells mobilised with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor on left ventricular systolic function and restenosis after coronary stenting in myocardial infarction: the MAGIC cell randomised clinical trial. Lancet 2004;363:751-6. This randomised trial examined the effects of coronary artery administration of bone marrow stem cells after culprit vessel stent insertion following acute myocardial infarction. Compared to untreated control patients, myocardial perfusion and exercise tolerance were improved in the treated group. However, recruitment to the trial was halted because of high rate of in-stent restenosis in patients who received g-CSF.
