Autologous skeletal myoblast transplantation for severe postinfarction left ventricular dysfunction
-
Menasche P, Hagege AA, Vilquin JT, et al. Autologous skeletal myoblast transplantation for severe postinfarction left ventricular dysfunction. J Am Coll Cardiol 2003;41:1078-83. This paper established the feasibility of human cellular cardiomyoplasiy for myocardial repair using skeletal myoblasts after acute myocardial infarction, with contraction seen in previously akinetic myocardium. However, patients suffered high rates of ventricular arrhythmias requiring cardioverter-defibrillator implantation.

Evidence that human cardiac myocytes divide after myocardial infarction
-
Beltrami AP, Urbanek K, Kajstura J, et al. Evidence that human cardiac myocytes divide after myocardial infarction. N Engl J Med 2001;344:1750-7. This paper challenged the dogma that the adult heart is a post-mitotic organ and suggested that there may be a population of cardiac stem cells involved in myocardial repair.

Transplantation of progenitor cells and regeneration enhancement in acute myocardial infarction (TOPCARE-AMI)
-
Assmus B, Schachinger V, Teupe C, et al. Transplantation of progenitor cells and regeneration enhancement in acute myocardial infarction (TOPCARE-AMI). Circulation 2002;106:3009-17. This clinical study used intracoronary injection of autologous bone marrow derived or circulating progenitor cells after acute myocordial infarction. Both treatments improved myocordial contractile function when compared with on untreated reference group of control patients. The authors have initiated a randomised controlled trial based on this pilot study.

Effects of intracoronary infusion of peripheral blood stem-cells mobilised with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor on left ventricular systolic function and restenosis after coronary stenting in myocardial infarction: The MAGIC cell randomised clinical trial
-
Kang H-J, Kim S, Zhang Y, et al. Effects of intracoronary infusion of peripheral blood stem-cells mobilised with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor on left ventricular systolic function and restenosis after coronary stenting in myocardial infarction: the MAGIC cell randomised clinical trial. Lancet 2004;363:751-6. This randomised trial examined the effects of coronary artery administration of bone marrow stem cells after culprit vessel stent insertion following acute myocardial infarction. Compared to untreated control patients, myocardial perfusion and exercise tolerance were improved in the treated group. However, recruitment to the trial was halted because of high rate of in-stent restenosis in patients who received g-CSF.
