This is a prospective longitudinal study using a sample of firefighters divided on the basis of their exposure intensity, which was used as a tool to predict the development of reactive airway dysfunction syndrome at 6 months post exposure. A dose-response gradient between WTC dust exposure and nonspecific hyperreactivity lasted up to 6 months after the disaster.

The objective of this study was to examine the respiratory effects of fine World Trade Center particulate matter on young adult female mice, and compare its effects with a toxic and a nontoxic reference material. Compared to the reference materials, WTC particulate caused only mild pulmonary inflammation, but a striking degree of airway hyperresponsiveness.
