Coyle Nod1 responds to peptidoglycan delivered by the Helicobacter pylori cag pathogenicity island Nat Immunol 5 2004 1166 1174 This work presents elegant data demonstrating that extracellular pathogens can induce a host response via nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (Nod)1. The work shows the essential role of a type-IV secretion system in translocating small peptidoglycan (PG) fragments into the cytosol of epithelial cells. Further, the response is dependent on a functional lytic transglycosylase, Slt.
