    • 2/c, where G is the gravitational constant, M is the mass of the hole, and c is the speed of light; a* is restricted to the range 0 to 1. In addition to the two parameters, M and a*, a black hole can in principle have a third parameter, electric charge, but astrophysical black holes are likely to be neutral.

    • The bulge of a galaxy is a roughly spherical collection of old stars. In a spiral galaxy (like the Milky Way), the bulge dominates the inner region, whereas the more gas-rich disk and its younger stars extend farther out. In the case of an elliptical galaxy, the bulge constitutes almost all the stars in the galaxy.

    • The rest wavelength of a line is the wavelength that would be measured in a frame of reference not moving or accelerating with respect to the source. Laboratory experiments on Earth measure this wavelength because the radiation source and the measuring device are fixed with respect to each other.
