2-:L-cysteine was 1:0.47:2.43. The solution was refluxed for ca. 1 h to promote growth of CdTe. The resulting NPs were 2 nm in diameter with band edge emission at 520 nm and quantum efficiency 15%. The final concentration of CdTe NP was ca. 0.135 mmol, assuming the agglomeration number equal to 65 for 2 nm crystallites.

The gel plates used both for native and for SDS electrophoresis were precast 4-20% linear gradient Tris-HCl gels (Bio-Rad); running times 1.5 h at 82 V, 25 mA. A 10 μL aliquot of the sample was mixed with 2 μL of the sample buffer, and the appropriate amount (2-10 μL) of the mixture was injected into the gel wells to obtain well-resolved spots of desirable dimensions. Sample buffer for SDS-PAGE contained 50% glycerol, 25% 2-mercaptoethanol, 10% SDS, 0.1 bromophenol blue, and Tris-HCl pH 6.8. SDS electrophoresis running buffer was made from 6.06 g of Tris base, 28.5 g of glycine, and 1.0 g of SDS dissolved in 1 L of water.

The sample buffer for native state gel electrophoresis was prepared from 15.5 mL of 1 M Tris-HCl pH 6.8, 2.5 mL of a 1% solution of bromophenol blue, 7 mL of water, and 25 mL of glycerol. The electrophoresis running buffer was made by dissolving 3.0 g of Tris base and 14.4 g of glycine in water and adjusting the volume to 1 L at pH 8.3.

A 0.5 x 0.5 cm piece was cut out from the gel plate after separation of the products of the conjugation reaction. The spot had noticeably yellow coloration indicative of CdTe NPs. The piece of gel was attached to a glass slide and placed in the sample compartment of a Fluorolog 3 instrument. The luminescence spectrum was obtained at the excitation wavelength of 450 nm.
