    • Shuffling of a family of genes allowed sampling of a larger portion of sequence space and accelerated the rate of functional enzyme improvement when compared with the shuffling of a single gene. • Molecular evolution of an arsenate detoxification pathway by DNA shuffling
    • This is the first report that demonstrates that DNA shuffling can rapidly improve the performance of a multigene operon. The engineered operon conferred 40-fold increased resistance to arsenate. 13 mutations were generated of which 10 were found within the gene coding for the arsenite membrane pump. Although the arsenate reductase contained no mutations, its expression level was increased, resulting in 12-fold arsenate reduction activity

    • Sequences encoding novel catechol 2,3-dioxygenases were retrieved as hybrid genes from environmental samples. Central segments of catechol 2,3-dioxygenase genes were amplified by PCR and inserted into the nahH gene by replacing the corresponding nahH sequence.
