Though wheezing was more likely initially in the high endotoxin exposure group, this rapidly declined with time whereas the low endotoxin group remained stable in wheezing frequency.

Effect of early cat exposure was again evaluated, but careful attention was paid to genetic predisposition which was evaluated by ascertaining maternal cat sensitivity. The presence of early cat exposure in the setting of maternal cat allergy was found to raise the fisk of wheezing, whereas a negative maternal history was protective.

Although high endotoxin levels were associated with more nonatopic wheeze, it was inversely related to atopy and atopic wheeze.

In a birth cohort study of 3291 patients, cat allergen exposure as measured from parental mattress was significantly lower in families with allergic mothers. The notion of lower atopy prevalence in pet-owning families being possibly due to lower genetic predisposition to atopy thus allowing comfortable pet ownership is discussed.
