J Immunol 2002, 168:4659-4666. This article demonstrates that the chemokine receptor CCR2 is required for mature dendritic cell migration into the lymph nodes, presumably because of a blockade in migration from the blood, resulting in a T1 to T2 switch in the pulmonary immune response. The ligand for this activity is not MCP-1.

    • Montagnoli C, Bacci A, Bozza S, Gaziano R, Mosci P, Sharpe AH, Romani L: B7/CD28-dependent CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells are essential components of the memory-protective immunity to Candida albicans. J Immunol 2002, 169:6298-6308. The results by Hori et al. and Montagnoli et al. [21,22] demonstrate that T regulatory cells are generated during fungal infection. Although these authors are the first to classify them as CD4+CD25+ and the studies are well-done, it should be noted that there is a body literature from the late 1980s describing 'suppressor T cells' in Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida albicans infections, notably from Juneann Murphy's laboratory. In light of the latest developments in T cell regulation, it is worthwhile for readers to review these previous data under the current understanding of T cell biology.

This manuscript demonstrates that one mechanism by which antibody promotes anti-cryptococcal immunity is by changing the structure of the capsular polysaccharide and thus allowing binding to integrins independent of antibody.
