    • The method reported in ref. 4 is applicable to afford surface patterns of gold clusters with diameter between 2 and 20 nm and hexagonal lattice constants from 30 to 170 nm. To avoid any unspecific binding of the polar dyes to the silica surface the gold-patterned surfaces were finally made hydrophobic by treatment with octadecyltrichlorosilane, see experimental part for details.
