Jejunal luminal nitric oxide during severe hypovolemia and sepsis in anesthetized pigs
-
Snygg J, Fandriks L, Bengtson JR, et al.: Jejunal luminal nitric oxide during severe hypovolemia and sepsis in anesthetized pigs. Intensive Care Med 2001, 27:1807-1813. The authors investigated intestinal mucosal nitric oxide formation after either hypovolemic shock or septic shock in a porcine model. They found that intestinal perfusion and oxygen delivery were reduced in both groups, but jejunal nitric oxide production and oxygen consumption were markedly reduced in the hypovolemic group.

Splanchnic vasoregulation during mesenteric ischemia and reperfusion in pigs
-
Jakob SM, Tenhunen JJ, Heino A, et al.: Splanchnic vasoregulation during mesenteric ischemia and reperfusion in pigs. Shock 2002, 18:142-147. This study evaluated the hepatic arterial buffer response to portal vein occlusion in a porcine model. The investigators found that reduced mesenteric perfusion impairs the hepatic arterial buffer response.

Pancreatic protease inhibition during shock attenuates cell activation and peripheral inflammation
-
Fitzal F, Delano FA, Young C, et al.: Pancreatic protease inhibition during shock attenuates cell activation and peripheral inflammation. J Vasc Res 2002, 39:320-329. This report examined the role of intestinal pancreatic protease inhibition during shock in a rodent model, which demonstrated an attenuation of intestinal mucosal injury.
