Toward detecting and identifying macromolecules in a cellular context: Template matching applied to electron tomograms
-
Cryo-ET of cellular structures has entered the realm of molecular resolution. Such tomograms contain an imposing amount of information, but this information is not readily available because of residual noise and the crowded nature of the cytoplasm. This paper describes a pattern recognition approach for mapping the spatial distribution of macromolecules of known structure in tomograms ('template matching') and demonstrates the feasibility of such an approach.
