Mechanisms for activation and antagonism of an AMPA-sensitive glutamate receptor: Crystal structures of the GluR2 ligand binding core
-
Armstrong NA, Gouaux E: Mechanisms for activation and antagonism of an AMPA-sensitive glutamate receptor: Crystal structures of the GluR2 ligand binding core. Neuron (2000) 28:165-181. • The structure of the LBD of GluR2 was determined in the ligand-free state and in the presence of antagonist, partial agonist and full agonist ligands. Agonist binding induced cleft closure, which was larger for the full agonist glutamate than for the partial agonist kainate. This correlation led to the proposal that LBD cleft closure mediates the channel activation step.

First images of a glutamate receptor ion channel: Oligomeric state and molecular dimensions of GluRB homomers
-
Safferling M, Tichelaar W, Kümmerle G, Jouppila A, Kuusinen A, Keinänen K, Madden DR: First images of a glutamate receptor ion channel: Oligomeric state and molecular dimensions of GluRB homomers. Biochemistry (2001) 40:13948-13953. • The first electron microscopic analysis of intact iGluR channels indicates that they are elongated and involuted. The overall dimensions are consistent with a dimer-of-dimers packing model.
