    • Recent unpublished results by the Gothenburg Group, of femtosecond linear dichroism and transient absorption measurements on 1 in a series of alcohols has described a process with a large anisotropy and with lifetimes in the region of tens of picoseconds. The process shows an inverse relationship with the dielectric constant of the solvent, the shortest lifetime being observed for methanol, which has the highest dielectric constant. Acetonitrile, with a higher dielectric constant than methanol, might reasonably be expected to exhibit a shorter lifetime again.
