    • In more complicated systems, the fields and dipole moments should be treated as vectorial quantities; the equations can be read as such. For the simple system at hand, the assumption is that the product E′ cos(θ) between field and the dipoles is Gaussian distributed. Other distributions (e.g., a Gaussian distribution in E′ in combination with a flat distribution in θ) can of course give slightly different results.

    • Because of intraband energy transfer, these hole-burning studies do not yield ensemble-average line widths, because the efficiency for hole burning depends on the lifetime, and therefore the line-width is underestimated.
