An analysis of available data suggests that potent antiretroviral drug therapy has led to significant reductions in the incidence of AIDS, and that considerable immune recovery occurs, which is sufficient in many cases to provide adequate protection against AIDS-associated opportunistic infections.

In this important case report a single patient is described to whom intermittent HAART was given before cessation of drug treatment at 176 days. In this patient viral control had been maintained for 2 years in the presence of vigorous HIV-specific CTL and HTL responses, and in the absence of neutralizing antibodies.
