This study demonstrates, using human leucocyte antigen-peptide tetrameric complexes, that after the initiation of HAART there appears to be an exponential decay of HIV-1-specific CTLs, which continues while viraemia remains undetectable.

In this important case report a single patient is described to whom intermittent HAART was given before cessation of drug treatment at 176 days. In this patient viral control had been maintained for 2 years in the presence of vigorous HIV-specific CTL and HTL responses, and in the absence of neutralizing antibodies.
