Targeted mutation of plasma phopholipid transfer protein gene markedly reduces high-density lipoprotein levels
-
10 Jiang X, Bruce C, Mar J, et al. Targeted mutation of plasma phopholipid transfer protein gene markedly reduces high-density lipoprotein levels. J Clin Invest 1999; 103:907-914. PLTP knockout mice showed that low PLTP activity causes markedly decreased HDL levels, suggesting that the transfer of surface components of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins is essential to maintain HDL levels.

J Lipid Res 1999; 40:2333-2339. Severe lipoprotein lipase deficiency exhibited decreased net mass CET, in contrast with increased net CET in common hypertriglyceridaemia. Lipoprotein lipase had stimulating effects on CET even when lipolytic activity was totally blocked.

Low density lipoproteins develop resistance to oxidative modification due to inhibition of cholesteryl ester transfer protein by a monoclonal antibody
-
15 Sugano M, Sawada S, Tsuchida K, et al. Low density lipoproteins develop resistance to oxidative modification due to inhibition of cholesteryl ester transfer protein by a monoclonal antibody. J Lipid Res 2000; 41:126-133. By a monoclonal antibody against CETP, both the cholesteryl ester and triglyceride content in LDL was decreased. Monoclonal antibody-treated LDL became resistant against oxidation, which was assessed by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances or diene formation. These results suggest that low CETP plays an anti-atherogenic role in LDL remodelling.

Increased atherosclerosis in apoE and LDL receptor gene knock-out mice as a result of human cholesteryl ester transfer protein transgene expression
-
43 Plump AS, Masucci-Magoulas L, Bruce C, et al. Increased atherosclerosis in apoE and LDL receptor gene knock-out mice as a result of human cholesteryl ester transfer protein transgene expression. Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol 1999; 19:1105-1110. CETP was a pro-atherogenic factor in apoE knockout and LDL receptor knockout mice. However, this pro-atherogenicity appears to be weaker than anti-atherogenic effects of apoAI transgene in apoE knockout/apoAI/CETP mice.

Remodeling of HDL by CETP in vivo and by CETP and hepatic lipase in vitro results in enhanced uptake of HDL cholesteryl ester by cells expressing scavenger receptor B-I
-
54 Collet X, Tall AR, Serajuddin H, et al. Remodeling of HDL by CETP in vivo and by CETP and hepatic lipase in vitro results in enhanced uptake of HDL cholesteryl ester by cells expressing scavenger receptor B-I. J Lipid Res 1999; 40:1185-1193. Uptake of HDL-cholesteryl ester by SRBI is a major route for RCT. Both CETP and hepatic lipase participate in remodelling HDL, resulting in enhanced cholesteryl ester transport to the liver via SRBI, suggesting an anti-atherogenic role of CETP in this pathway.
