J Clin Microbiol 1999; 37:1436-1440. These investigators have evaluated enrichment versus direct plating of stool specimens and rectal swabs for the detection of VRE. Enrichment and stool specimens were clearly more sensitive. These results may explain some of the differences observed between Europe and the USA. In the latter enrichment is seldom used.

The data suggest that VRE emerged at these facilities among patients with long hospital stays and a history of antimicrobial use. This study provides further evidence of the differences in the epidemiology of VRE between Europe and the USA.
