First study of nuclear export in plants, using the interaction of SqLCV NSP and MPB to develop an in vivo assay in transiently transfected tobacco protoplasts. Identified an NES in NSP - the first identified in a plant protein - and showed that the NES from Xenopus TFIIIA could functionally substitute for the plant NES, which suggests that the basic nuclear export machinery is conserved between plants, animals and yeast.

Details plasmodesmal, ER and cytoskeletal associations of the TMV GFP-MP during the course of infection by confocal imaging of cells located at different positions through out expanding infected lesions, and compares these to GFP-MP associations observed in infected BY-2 protoplasts. First detailed demonstration of associations of TMV MP with cortical ER, and suggests that MP may be located at ER-associated viral replication sites (viroplasms).

Detailed study of ER alterations during TMV infection through the examination of TMV-infected lesions in transgenic tobacco plants that express an ER-targeted form of GFP. Reports the intriguing finding that although early in infection the ER undergoes dramatic morphological changes into large aggregates, it appears to 'recover' to a normal appearing reticular network late in infection (the center of expanding infected lesions).
