2+-dependent, diffusible factor modulates the cGMP-gated ion channels differently than in rods
-
2+-dependent, diffusible factor modulates the cGMP-gated ion channels differently than in rods. J Gen Physiol 1998, 112:537-548. Cone photoreceptor currents were recorded with a suction pipette after electropermeabilization of the currents inner segment membrane. The authors report that cGMP activation of channels was modulated fivefold by a novel calcium-dependent diffusible factor. This modulation is substantially larger than that effected by calmodulin in rods.

-
34. Nikonov S, Engheta N, Pugh EN Jr: Kinetics of recovery of the dark-adapted salamander rod photoresponse. J Gen Physiol 1998, 111:7-37. This paper provides a rigorous investigation of the inactivation steps in vertebrate phototransduction through a combination of suction pipette experiments on isolated rods and mathematical analysis. The authors develop predictions for the electrical response kinetics of rod photoreceptors when calcium is either free to change or is clamped at its resting level.

Onset of feedback reactions underlying vertebrate rod photoreceptor light adaptation
-
54. Calvert PD, Ho TW, LeFebvre YM, Arshavsky VY: Onset of feedback reactions underlying vertebrate rod photoreceptor light adaptation. J Gen Physiol 1998, 111:39-51. The authors measured the role of calcium feedback on guanylyl cyclase and RK activity in vertebrate rod photoreceptors in vitro. They reported that both effects are rapid (i.e. in the sub-second range).

Phosphorylation of photolyzed rhodopsin is calcium-insensitive in retina permeabilized by alpha-toxin
-
55. Otto-Bruc AE, Fariss RN, Van Hooser JP, Palczewski K: Phosphorylation of photolyzed rhodopsin is calcium-insensitive in retina permeabilized by alpha-toxin. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1998, 95:15014-15019. The authors develop an alpha-toxin permeablized outer segment preparation that retains its solubilized proteins (including recoverin), but which allows manipulation of free calcium inside the outer segment. They find that the phosphorylation of rhodopsin after exposure to a stimulus that isomerizes 10% of the pigment is not altered under high- and low-calcium conditions, and conclude that rhodopsin phosphorylation in situ is not affected by recoverin, in contrast to the role reported in [51-53].

Variability in the time-course of single-photon responses from toad rods: Termination of rhodopsin's activity
-
56. Whitlock GG, Lamb TD: Variability in the time-course of single-photon responses from toad rods: termination of rhodopsin's activity. Neuron 1999, 23:337-351. Reports that rod responses to single photons exhibit very variable inactivation kinetics and that the apparent R* lifetime is dependent on calcium. Postulates that calcium acts via recoverin to modulate R* phosphorylation by RK and thereby regulate R* lifetime.

RGS9, a GTPase accelerator for phototransduction
-
59. He W, Cowan CW, Wensel TG: RGS9, a GTPase accelerator for phototransduction. Neuron 1998, 20:95-102. Discovered that the shut-off of activated G protein, by hydrolysis of GTP's terminal phosphate, is greatly accelerated when a third factor, the GTPase activating protein RGS9, binds to the G*-E* complex (see Figure 1c).
